Thor: Ragnarok may have finally found its director. According to a report from The Wrap, Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Conchords) is in talks with Marvel to helm the upcoming Thor sequel. The news has not yet been confirmed by Marvel.
Waititi reportedly beat out Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) for the directing job, and he will be the Thor franchise’s third director in as many films. The first Thor was directed by Kenneth Branagh, and Thor: The Dark World was helmed by Alan Taylor.
With how much time Avengers: Age of Ultron spent setting up Thor: Ragnarok (along with many other Marvel sequels, including Civil War), it will be interesting to see how the events previewed in the Avengers sequel will play out here. It will also be intriguing to see exactly how Waititi puts his own stamp on the franchise, following in the footsteps of Branagh and Taylor, while still keeping true to the spirit and style of Thor‘s unique cast of characters.
Thor: Ragnarok will see the return of the franchise’s three main stars: Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Jaimie Alexander (currently starring on NBC’s new hit drama Blindspot) as Lady Sif. The film is set to be released on July 28, 2017.
