Legendary Artist Returns (Sort Of) For Rare Venom Cover

A new Venom series is going to be hitting comic store shelves in November 23rd and it’s been announced that a 1/1000 variant cover will feature the art of legendary Spider-Man artist Todd McFarlane. What we’ve learned from Newsarama is that this piece of McFarlane art is not very new at all.

In fact it’s not even an old cover or pin up, but a panel McFarlane drew for 1988’s Amazing Spider-Man #300, which was the first appearance of Eddie Brock as Venom. Richard Isanove has added a background and recoloured the panel so it could be used as a variant cover.

While something like this is rare, it’s not the first time it’s been done as 2011’s Mighty Thor #1 used decades old Walt Simonson art as a cover.

The character of Venom has been through a few incarnations and was originally conceived as a new costume for Peter Parker (The Amazing Spiderman #252).  Once Peter learned of the alien symbiotes true nature he separated himself from the symbiote and it found a new host Eddie Brock.

Venom started out as a villain but has later become an anti-hero and even part of the Avengers. The new series from writer Mike Costa and artist Gerardo Sandoval will hit the racks in November. What do you think of the cover? What direction do you hope this new series takes?  What is your favourite version of Venom?  Let us know in the comments below!
