NYCC 2016 Marvel Animation News Round Up

As with last New York Comic-Con, a ton of Marvel Animation news was dropped. This year is probably one of the more dense years which means more fun to come.

First things first, Ultimate Spider-Man is coming to an end after this current season “VS The Sinister Six” but that doesn’t mean that we are losing Spider-Man entirely. Just announced is a new animated series that will go back and visit Peter Parker as he deals with school and being a hero. No word has been said if this will be a bit more like what they are doing with Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but I’m guessing so since it would line up with how the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series is styled after the movie in terms of character design. Also no word on if Drake Bell will reprise the role of Spider-Man this time. He has voiced the character in Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Ultimate Spider-Man, and in Avengers Assemble. Ultimate Spider-Man is to end in January 2017 with the new series, titled Marvel’s Spider-Man, to debut some time after in 2017. Probably before Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7th 2016. All information is from Comicbook.com as well as ComicBook Resources.

Moving over to Avengers Assemble, whose 4th season will be titled Avengers: Secret Wars. We have the return of the fan favorite character Peggy Carter, with Hayley Atwell returning to voice the character. She’s actually returning in an upcoming episode so it is unsure if she is going to play a part in next season. This marks the first television appearance of Peggy Carter since the show has ended. All information is from Stitch Kingdom.

Then over to Guardians of the Galaxy, whose episode 25 snuck under the radar recently, where season 2 was officially debuted with the premiere shown. So this upcoming season the show is going to deal with the more cosmic side of the Marvel Universe and with that both Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock will appear in this season. The premiere was screened for panel attendees and we find the team split up. Rocket, Groot, and Captain Marvel find themselves captured by the High Evolutionary in space, while Drax, Gamora, and Star-Lord  help The Avengers save the world and in turn save their friends. All information is from Comic Book Resources/CBR.com.

Also announced were a bunch of shorts both from Funko and Marvel Animation. The Funko shorts, releasing later this year, will tell 3 short stories. The first is Spellbound which has Iron Man and Spider-Man fighting Loki. This one was shown to the crowd in attendance. The second one, Chimichangas, has Deadpool taking on Venom which sounds weird but also could be super fun. And the last one, Rescue, has Rocket saving Groot from The Collector. All 3 sound like a lot of fun. All information is from Funko/Popvinyls.com.

The other set of shorts announced are the Ant-Man and Wasp shorts which will explore the original Ant-Man (Hank Pym) and Wasp’s (Janet Van Dyne) adventures during the Cold War. Ant-Man will be voiced by Josh Keaton (Voltron: Legendary Defender) while Wasp will be voiced by Melissa Rauch (Big Bang Theory). These shorts are set to debut in 2017 so keep an eye out for them. All information is from Comicbook.com.
