Angela Bassett Boards Black Panther Film

Angela Bassett has Boarded Black Panther, playing Ramonda, Mother of T’Challa and Queen Mother of Wakanda.

The Academy Award nominated Actress is currently starring in American Horror Story where she’s played exciting roles for the past three seasons ranging from Marie Laveau in Season 3 to Ramona Royale in Season 5 and Lee in Season 6. It’s range she’ll need to tackle the Queen Mother of Wakanda and former Queen of the African Nation.

Ramonda was originally South African in the comics, winning the heart of T’Chaka after his wife N’Yami gave birth to T’Challa the heir to the Wakandan throne.  She’s the mother of princess Shuri, a Black Panther in her own right and a major political figure in Wakanda.  Ramonda has most recently played a major role in the newest Black Panther comic book storyline that finds T’Challa returning from saving the world to a troubled Wakanda torn by political strife.  Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, his book has also led to World of Wakanda by Roxanne Gay about Women of Color in the region

Arguably at the top of the heap is Ramonda whose own political story should make for some very interesting discussions.  Strong women play a major role in the Wakandan power structure which ought to make the film a unique entry into the so-far United States dominated franchise.  It leaves a lot of room for speculation about the plot of the film with the only certainty that Ryan Coogler and Marvel have assembled a star-studded stellar cast to tell a really intriguing story about a never explored region of the MCU.  Excited True Believers? Directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, alongside Micheal B Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba.  It hits theaters Febuary 16th 2018.
