SDCC: BREAKING: Skrulls Announced as Captain Marvel Villain

During their Hall H panel on Saturday, Marvel confirmed that the Skrulls, an alien race of shapeshifters, would be featured as the villain of the upcoming Captain Marvel film.

This is the first time for the Skrulls to appear in any live-action Marvel film though they have long played a significant role in the comics.

During the panel it was also confirmed the story will take place in the 1990s and will feature Nick Fury. This timing of the story makes it a prequel of sorts to Marvel Cinematic Universe, though any direct connection to the future films has yet to be revealed.

Concept art was also released during the panel showing Carol’s suit and the look of the Skrulls. In the photos we see Carol in a suit very similar to her current outfit in Marvel Comics. The Skrulls are green, but that doesn’t rule out the likelihood their shapeshifting abilities will be a key plot driver.  It has not been officially released by Marvel but was shared online by attendees:

It’s interesting to note that Fox also owns rights to use the Skrull through the Fantastic Four.

Star Brie Larson was not in attendance for the panel, but tweeted her feelings about the announcement:

Captain Marvel is set to be released on March 8, 2019.
