While there’s been no official date set for the film, we do know what writer & director James Gunn is currently hard at work on the script for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 at the moment. However, we may now have a good idea just when to expect the Marvel Studios release to hit theaters. Speaking with Collider, the director was asked about production plans and gave a rough start date that might be a bit sooner than you were expecting.
“It would be a little more than a year that we start filming.”
A little more than a year means that the threequel would start filming in late 2018 or possibly early 2019. This means we could likely expect to see the Guardians next solo adventure sometime in 2020. The most likeliest of these dates being the slated May 1, 2020 release date which would make it the second film in Marvel’s Phase Four. Well, that is if it called Phase Four as Kevin Feige has hinted that they may not refer to them as such post-Phase Three.
While he has his eyes on a start date, there’s still plenty of work to be done and Gunn is hard at work on the film’s script. The writer and director commented on what challenges he faces in bringing the trilogy to a satisfying conclusion.
“It’s been pretty easy. The truth is, the first movie is the first act, the second movie is the second act, and the third movie is the third act so I’m tying a lot of stuff together in the third film. We get a lot of answers on a lot of different things, so doing that in an elegant way takes a little bit of grace and elegance. It’s more challenging in that respect writing the third movie than the second movie.”
