Gore Verbinski In Negotiations To Helm Gambit

It looks like the Gambit film is going forward after all. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) is in early talks with FOX to direct the Gambit solo film starring Channing Tatum as the beloved mutant.

Gambit has been in development hell for quite some time now. The film was originally going to be directed by Rupert Wyatt who ended up leaving the project due to schedule conflicts. The studio then hired Doug Liman who eventually dropped out too.

Liman jumped over to Warner Bros. to helm the DC picture Justice League Dark, a movie that he also stepped away from, but that was due to schedule conflicts. Gambit has been in limbo ever since then, but it now appears that the studio is getting closer to making it a reality.

Should Verbinski sign on, the film would most likely start filming sometime next year. Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg, both longtime X-Men veterans, are attached to executive produce.

Josh Zetumer wrote the screenplay for the film. While Gambit has no release date, the movie would probably not hit theaters until 2019 at the very latest. FOX already has a big year coming up for them in regards to the X-Men franchises.

Josh Boone’s New Mutants will be hitting theaters on April 13, 2018, with Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of Wade Wilson in Deadpool 2 on June 1, 2018, followed by X-Men: Dark Phoenix that is slated to come out on November 2, 2018.
