Plot: Peter Parker returns to the Daily Bugle, but he’s no longer a photographer. Thanks to Joe “Robbie” Robertson, Peter is the new editor of the Bugle’s science section. Plus Peter’s girlfriend, Bobbi Morse (a.k.a. Mockingbird), gets him an exclusive tour of Humanitech Robotics since Bobbi is head of security. Looks like the Parker Luck is taking a turn for the better.
Story: Peter Parker’s new job is a perfect combination of classic and modern Spider-Man elements. One of the big changes Dan Slott made to Peter’s life was a job that used Peter’s aptitude for science. Some fans still missed Peter at the Bugle but this opened up new story opportunities. Now Peter’s position as science section editor is a great use of his scientific background while also using his history at the Daily Bugle.
Dan Slott’s dialogue is on point for this issue. He captures the humor that makes Amazing Spider-Man enjoyable. The best example would be the exchanges between Spider-Man and Mockingbird. Slott portrays the duo as a fun couple that can take shots at each other. While they aren’t completely head over heals, Spider-Man and Mockingbird are an entertaining pair and fun to read.
Also this issue features some foreshadowing with the Osborn boys. After Harry Lyman (nee Osborn) and Liz Allen return home they discover the boys (Normie and Stanley) have scratches. The scene then shows the nanny, Emma, hiding two samples of blood. A previous issue showed Norman Osborn trying to become the Green Goblin again but failed. It is possible Emma is working for Norman and his grandsons’s blood could contain a solution to Norman’s Goblin dilemma.
Art: This issue’s artwork is spectacular. Stuart Immonen draws some really awesome action scenes. He draws his characters in dynamic poses that make the scenes come alive. Also we get a really cool scene when it’s revealed that Futuretech’s robots contained the villain, Quicksand. Once Quicksand reforms, Immonen draws a great perception shot showing the size differences between Quicksand and the other characters.
Ran Beredo makes excellent color choices for this issue. His colors combined with Immonen’s artwork create visually stunning scenes that hold the readers attention. Plus Beredo’s colors create the necessary lighting for each scene.
Verdict: Amazing Spider-Man #791 concludes the “Fall of Parker” arc. This issue starts Peter’s great new job at the Daily Bugle. It sets up the new direction for Spider-Man post-Parker Industries. Also we get a great teaser for a future goblin arc. Overall, this issue is a great jumping on point that’s still fun for current readers.
