DeWanda Wise Is The Perfect Choice For Monica Rambeau

Though it hasn’t been confirmed who she’s been cast as in Captain Marvel, DeWanda Wise is the perfect choice for Monica Rambeau. Monica Rambeau, a Marvel comics heroine, has been a character that many Marvel fans have been hoping to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The want for her seeing her on the big screen increased when Captain Marvel was announced, and has definitely even increased more with the news about DeWanda! With Monica’s strong ties to Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, and Monica having the right look for the part, it’s not a far conclusion to come to that DeWanda Wise should be Monica. Fans on Twitter are already there!

Monica Rambeau made her first appearance in Marvel comics in 1982 in an Amazing Spider-Man issue as Captain Marvel. She held that title briefly; and just like her friend, Carol, Monica went through various name changes. Monica is currently Spectrum in the comics. She has cosmic powers, flight, and super strength amongst her her many awesome skills. With the main villain of Captain Marvel being the skrulls, a shape shifting alien race, Carol would want to have someone just as powerful as her fighting by her side. Of course, her long time friend, Monica Rambeau makes the most sense.

DeWanda Wise has the perfect look for Monica, but also has the acting talent to back it up. Wise is the star of the Netflix Original series, She’s Gotta Have It, produced by Spike Lee. Wise performs a wonderful monologue in the opening first couple of minutes of She’s Gotta Have It. She graduated NYU’s Tisch School of Arts and has trained with the Atlantic Theatre Company acting schoolDeWanda has appeared on other shows such as Underground and Shots Fired. I’m personally more familiar with her work from Underground, which was guest star on for a few episodes. Wise is definitely a rising talent in Hollywood and joining onto Captain Marvel is only the beginning.

Yet, there really is only one character who Wise should be cast as: Spectrum aka Monica Rambeau!  As someone who has been an advocate for representation of women in the MCU, especially women of color, the casting announcement of DeWanda has me deeply excited and just like other fans hoping she’ll be suiting up as Spectrum. Captain Marvel has also been the film that I’ve been most excited for from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Women of all races want to see themselves represented in franchises their fans of including the superhero genre! There’s still many other women who have yet to be represented in a superhero film, but DeWanda’s casting is another step forward. Plus, who doesn’t want a superhero with two women leading the film? Wouldn’t you love to see Brie Larson and DeWanda Wise bring this duo to life on the big screen?

Marvel Studios has cast actors who weren’t well known as their heroes who have now become house hold names! So why can’t Marvel do the same with DeWanda Wise? Here’s to hoping that DeWanda is our Monica Rambeau!
