Remember when Marvel sent a “Save the Date” for the Wedding of the Century back in November? Speculation ran rampant as to who the mystery couple would be and who would merit such fanfare. On Friday, Marvel revealed the couple and it’s certainly one that’s worthy of this designation. After decades together, and a brief time apart, Colossus and Kitty Pryde are finally getting married.
X-Men Wedding Special #1 will feature a series of tales, culminating in the reunion of the long-time lovebirds. The wedding will take place sooner than the “Save the Date” estimated, with the issue set to release in May. The featured writers include X-Men: Gold writer Marc Guggenheim and Hawkeye writer Kelly Thompson. Legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont is also slated to return to the franchise with a standalone Kitty Pryde story.
Kitty and Colossus will join the list of celebrated X-Men weddings. The one that most people will remember is Cyclops and Jean Grey tying the knot in X-Men #30 back in 1994. There’s also Northstar, who married his long-time boyfriend in the pages of Astonishing X-Men #51 and Storm, who married the Black Panther in Black Panther #18. The latter was such a momentous occasion, it led to a momentary cease-fire in the first superhero Civil War.
It wasn’t always smooth sailing for Colossus and Kitty. Their relationship was first teased back in Uncanny X-Men #174 in 1983, which proved controversial at the time given Kitty’s young age. Colossus broke up with Kitty a year later, but the two remained close all the way until Colossus’ death, when he sacrificed himself to stop the Legacy Virus. After Colossus returned from the dead during Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run, the two resumed their relationship, which lasted until Fear Itself. Kitty Pryde then spent a few years in space, starting up a relationship with Star-Lord of the Guardians of the Galaxy, a relationship that lasted until she returned to Earth to lead the X-Men Gold team.
Now Colossus and Kitty Pryde are set to finally cement their relationship in holy matrimony. Look for X-Men Wedding Special #1 in June.
