James Gunn on the set of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

James Gunn Returning for Guardians Of The Galaxy 3

According to a report from Deadline today, Disney has rehired director James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Originally set to start filming early this year, the film was derailed when Disney fired Gunn last summer over the resurfacing of controversial tweets.

Gunn apologized for the tweets that included jokes about sensitive topics, which he admitted were offensive. The tweets, primarily posted prior to the first Guardians film, were resurfaced by right-wing Twitter user Mike Cernovich.

The firing was protested by most of the Guardians cast, who signed an open letter in support of Gunn.

There was also a public campaign among fans to get Gunn reinstated.

While speculation over possible replacement directors has run rampant the past few months, Disney only confirmed the film would move forward with Gunn’s script. Director Taika Waititi, a possible replacement option, publicly stated he was not interested in taking over the film.

According to Deadline, filming for the third installment will occur after Gunn wraps on DC’s Suicide Squad 2, a job he took after being fired. Suicide Squad 2 is scheduled to go into production this year.
