Disney’s D23 saw the media giant build on its Comic Con hype by announcing new cast members for its upcoming Falcon and the Winter Soldier series. The series was introduced at Comic Con 2019, giving fans a look at camaraderie between Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, as well as a look at the potential series villain: Daniel Bruhl’s Baron Zemo returning.
The series will focus on Sam and Bucky coping with the US government refusing to acknowledge Captain America’s wishes for the new Captain America. Showrunner Malcolm Spellman took the stage at D23 to share the series focus, as well as to announce some basic idea of the plot.
According to slashfilm, the series will reintroduce Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter and Wyatt Russell as the comic character known as “US Agent.” Spellman teased that the series will focus on Mackie and Stan’s past as they go up against a “darker version of Captain America.” As for VanCamp, the character hasn’t been seen since she kissed Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War. VanCamp was quiet about where she had been during the series, but she joined Spellman to audience acclaim nevertheless.
John Walker, AKA US Agent, was created as a Captain America antagonist. Originally a patriotic man serving at Fort Bragg just like Steve Rogers, Walker was created as Captain America’s ideological opposite. Rumors have been circulating that Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes would go up against a “corrupt version of Captain America”. Walker could very easily be that corrupt villain.
Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s stellar onscreen talent will be matched behind the camera with director Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale) and screenwriter Derek Kolstad (John Wick). The show has set a premiere date of Fall 2020 with a slate of 10 episodes, giving time for the series to impact the MCU in a major way.
Introducing US Agent adds a very real political element to the show. Traditionally portrayed as a rural farm boy, his blind support of US patriotism makes him an intriguing potential antagonist. Given powers by a character called the “Power Broker,” Walker willingly stages fights with extremist Captain America supporters, battles Steve Rogers himself, and serves the darker side of US interests. He is a foe to be reckoned with.
Falcon and The Winter Soldier is poised to be as taught a political thriller as Captain America: The Winter Soldier was. With the promise of delving deeper into the characters’ backstories and pasts, there is a chance that the show could even add additional information on the HYDRA betrayal. Will we see them return?
