The final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres this week. With only 13 episodes there’s a lot of ground to cover in order to wrap up the long-running show while also introducing a new, exciting storyline.
Although we’re thrilled to be getting another season, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t have our own wishlist for the final season.
More History of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Let’s start with a request that’s already been granted. This season will feature the team traveling through different points in time in order to stop the Chronicoms from destroying S.H.I.E.L.D. Although the premiere starts in the 30s, other time periods will be explored.
So it sounds like we’ll get plenty of S.H.I.E.L.D. throughout the ages. In fact, one of the reasons for creating the Coulson LMD last season was to give the team a competitive advantage against the Chronicoms by using Coulson’s knowledge of S.H.I.E.L.D. history.
Fans already know a lot about S.H.I.E.L.D. through this show as well as Agent Carter and the MCU films. We even saw a younger Coulson in Captain Marvel! But if S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded shortly after World World II, that leaves a lot uncovered so far by the MCU and television shows. We can’t wait to learn some new info about our favorite secret government organization.
The Return of Old Friends (and Enemies)
With Agent Carter’s Enver Gjokaj (Agent Daniel Sousa) and recurring guest star Patton Oswalt confirmed to appear in this season, who else might we expect to see? Nick Fury seems unlikely, but Peggy Carter or Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter? That might just happen.
Thanks to the Framework storyline in Season 4, the show was able to bring back the dead. But time travel opens a whole new option for bringing back characters who are deceased or from the past.
We also know HYDRA will play a role this season, which gives the opportunity to bring back some major villains like Arnim Zola or Grant Ward.
A Fitz Sighting?
Just kidding. Sort of. At the end of Season 6, Agent Leo Fitz was at an undisclosed location but in communication with the team. So, where is he? After being separated from the team for so much of Season 6, it’s heartbreaking to think he’s on the outside once again.
Although it’s already confirmed Iain De Caestecker will appear in the final season, the extent of his role is murky. The character hasn’t appeared in any trailers thus far. Hopefully he’s not missing too much of the season and FitzSimmons shippers get a happy ending for the too-often doomed couple.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Reborn
Between being shattered by HYDRA, disavowed by the government, and now hunted by the Chronicoms, S.H.I.E.L.D. could use a win. Regardless of what happens to the main team, it would nice to see the organization in a good place at the end of the show.
The tagline may be “One last mission,” but that could just refer to this team and not the entire organization. Mack has proven himself to be a capable director, so hopefully the Chronicoms don’t get entirely in the way of S.H.I.E.L.D. rebuilding in the future.
A Flash-forward
Given the current state of Marvel TV, with upcoming shows under the creative direction of Marvel Studios, it doesn’t seem like there will be much room for S.H.I.E.L.D. characters to return. Despite some overlap with the MCU in its early seasons, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D later diverged into its own show, with some fans even theorizing it may even be on an alternate timeline now compared to the MCU.
A flash-forward in the finale would provide some closure for these beloved characters in case we don’t see them again. A few scenes set in the future can’t answer every question, but it’s a good way to at least give a sense of where the characters end up.
