With Season 7 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiering this week (May 27th) you may be trying to remember where the show left off last August.
A lot happened in the Season 6 finale so here’s a refresher on some of the important plot elements that will carry over into Season 7.
The Chronicoms
Last season we learned the Chronicoms wanted to take over Earth to establish it as their new home planet. Believing S.H.I.E.L.D. was the only thing in their way, they sent Hunters to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D and took over the Lighthouse headquarters.
With the help of their old friend Enoch, who says he has a plan for saving Earth, Fitz and Simmons were able to escape the Hunters. It’s also later inferred Fitz and Simmons may have done some time traveling of their own between the time they escape and rejoin the rest of the team who were fighting the ancient entity Izel and not at the Lighthouse.
Simmons finds the rest of the team right after they’ve defeated Izel and Agent May is mortally wounded. Fortunately Simmons has tech that can heal May and an upgraded ship for the team.
She explains rather matter-of-factly what happened at the Lighthouse and that the Chronicoms plan on attacking S.H.I.E.L.D. throughout various points, which we later learn to mean points in time. (Missing from this picture is Fitz, who we hear over a comms link from an unknown location).
Time Travel
Using the enhanced Zephyr One ship, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team find themselves transported back to the 1930s at the end of the Season 6 finale.
Promo materials have since revealed that part of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s mission will be to save HYDRA. While it sounds odd for them to save their enemies, without HYDRA the organization may have never been founded.
But as Deke explains in this Season 7 clip released, don’t expect the team to be creating entirely new timelines like in Avengers: Endgame.
According to Deke’s “Time Stream Idea,” small changes are OK as long as they don’t completely redirect the events of time. They don’t have to worry about a “Butterfly Effect” where even the tiniest change could have a huge impact.
That said, things don’t always go as planned so Deke might be overly optimistic.
Coulson is Back (As an LMD)
Oh yeah, Coulson is back. Sort of. A new LMD (Life Model Decoy) version of Coulson is created at the end of Season 6, complete with all of his memories and enhanced with Chronicom technology.
The Chronicom Hunters possess Fury’s Black Box and centuries of anthropological research, putting the S.H.I.E.L.D. team at a competitive disadvantage. They needed an expert in S.H.I.E.L.D. history and bringing Coulson back was the logical solution.
What his relationship with the team will be like remains unseen, but given their emotional reactions to his creation it’s safe to assume it won’t be the easiest transition.
Who We’ll See in Season 7
Everyone from the lead cast will be returning for Season 7. And even though Agent May is still healing from her wounds and Fitz is in an unknown location in the Season 6 finale, they’re both confirmed to appear in the final season.
While many casting details are being kept under wraps we already know of at least two important guest appearances. Agent Carter’s Daniel Souza (Enver Gjokaj) and Patton Oswalt, who previously portrayed the Koenig brothers in the show, will both appear.
With the team hopping through time, you never know what other old friends (and enemies) they could run into.
