Marvel Launches New Graphic Novel Line for Young Readers

Marvel Entertainment and Scholastic announced a multi-year Original Graphic Novel program that will feature iconic teen heros including Miles Morales, Kamala Khan and Shuri.

The stories will be part of Scholastic’s Graphix Media line. The first OGN will be Miles Morales: Shock Waves, written by bestselling author Justin A. Reynolds with art by Eisner Award-nominated artist Pablo Leon, debuting next spring.

The following titles will feature Kamala Khan, written by Nadia Shammas, and Shuri, written by New York Times bestselling author Roseanne A. Brown.

While Marvel has already released several middle grade novels under the partnership, it makes sense to add original graphic novels. Marvel’s lack of offerings for young readers has been a point of criticism among fans in comparison to the variety of offerings from their competitor DC Comics.

“After launching our prose novels with Scholastic earlier this year, we’ve seen a huge demand for more Marvel stories and entry points into the Marvel Universe,” Sven Larsen, Vice President of Licensed Publishing at Marvel said in a release “These middle grade OGNs are the perfect next step to bring more readers in with the visual storytelling Marvel fans know and love.”

The titles will be available at comic book shops and traditional book stores. Marvel has confirmed more titles and their creative teams will be announced later this year.
