Jonah and Keeks kick off season four with a review of the Amazon Prime series “Cross,” starring Aldis Hodge as the titular character Alex Cross. As the title might suggest, the hosts spend a decent amount of time thirsting over Hodge and his co-star Isaiah Mustafa, who played Cross’ childhood best friend and partner in the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department.
The episode isn’t all thirsting and fanboying over Hodge and Mustafa. Jonah and Keeks spend some time discussing relationship dynamics between characters, wild moments in the plot, and comparing notes to figure out who solved the “who done it” and at what time they figured it out.
Keeks is new to this James Patterson world, and Jonah was working with memories of watching “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider” when he was younger. Yes, Morgan Freeman was the original live adaption of Alex Cross. Both hosts were unencumbered with expectations from past stories, which allowed them to enjoy this entirely original reimaging of the Cross.
This retelling of the story introduces Cross’ daughter and son; his Nana Mama, the grandmother who raised him after the death of his parents; and a lingering mystery of the unsolved murder of his late wife. All this trauma has compounded to make Cross an emotionally complex character with a toxic hero complex. Yes, it sounds like a lot, but it makes for a GREAT story.
“Cross” (2024) is the most recent adaptation of the character created by novelist James Patterson. The series was created by Ben Watkins (Burn Notice) and stars Aldis Hodge, Isaiah Mustafa, Juanita Jennings, and Ryan Eggold. Hodge is the third actor to portray a live-action version of Alex Cross. He shares the role with Morgan Freeman (“Kiss the Girls” 1997 and “Along Came a Spider” 2001) and Tyler Perry (“Alex Cross” 2012).
This psychological thriller was released on Prime Video on November 14, 2024. At the time of the recording, the series had a Tomatometer score of 75 percent and a Popcorn Meter rating of 67 percent.
