Sony Pictures Entertainment showcased celebrities, trailers, and footage, along with a promise of longer theatrical windows for its bold slate of films, which include strong IP and original stories. Sony made one thing clear: the big screen is central to their success.
Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Motion Picture Group, opened the panel with a direct appeal to exhibitors. He urged theaters to enforce longer theatrical windows even if that means not being able to show every film, “get off the ad-crack” by shortening pre-show advertising, and improve the overall moviegoing experience. Theatrical exclusivity with a premium experience will be the cornerstone for Sony’s plan for growth.
The Breadwinner

The night kicked off with comedian Nate Bargatze, making his feature film debut alongside Mandy Moore in “The Breadwinner.” This family-friendly comedy is about a stay-at-home dad who is completely out of his depth.
Bargatze said about theatrical releases, “[As a comedian] I sell tickets for a living. I want movies in theaters. I don’t plan to go straight to streaming.”
The Breadwinner debuts exclusively in theaters on May 29, 2027.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Sony announced Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, to thunderous applause. The trailer is the most-watched in history, surpassing one billion views in under a week, and the film is described as the most emotional and grown-up Spider-Man yet.
The footage revealed at CinemaCon focused on Peter grappling with the fallout of Spider-Man: No Way Home, particularly the loneliness of being forgotten. The crowd was shown quiet, awkward moments with Peter as he catches a glimpse of his former friend’s lives. The gritty, almost indie scene layers heavy emotions with classic Spider-Man humor.
As one of the more anticipated trailers of the night, the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer had the loudest crowd reaction during the presentation. The cheer went from joy to expressions of sorrow over Peter’s heartbreak. When Peter faced Damage Control, the crowd exploded. It’s safe to say this film will play in theaters around the world.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters this Summer, July 31, 2025.
Insidious and Resident Evil

Sony continued wowing the crowd by dropping the titles of two upcoming horror titles, Insidious: Out of the Further and Resident Evil.
Insidious: Out of the Further, directed by Jacob Chase, is a continuation of the franchise’s supernatural mythology, focusing on the main character opening a gateway between worlds through her dreams.
The trailer delivered classic jump scares and evoked a sense of dread. The trailer also featured Masie Richardson-Sellers, from Talamasca: The Secret Order, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and The Originals.
Insidious: Out of the Further will be released exclusively in theaters on Aug. 21, 2026. Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, will be in theaters Sept. 18, 2026.
This reboot of the video-game movie is a survival story from a single-person perspective. And, Cregger said this film will be faithful to the games. There were audible gasps during each trailer. Moviegoers will definitely want to share this experience in a dark theater.
The Social Reckoning & Klara and the Sun
With titles like The Social Reckoning and Klara and the Sun, Sony is making a run for the award season.
The Social Reckoning, from Aaron Sorkin, is the follow-up to The Social Network, centering on the story of 2021 Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. Haugen was a product manager and data engineer for Facebook.
She exposed internal documents that revealed the company’s awareness of the negative impacts of its platforms on users, particularly teens, its prioritization of profit over public safety, and evidence of how Facebook’s algorithms promoted divisive and harmful content. This David v Goliath story will be in theaters Oct. 9, 2026.
Klara and the Sun is a film adaptation of the 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro starring Jenna Ortega. This Taika Waititi-directed sci-fi drama is about a robot girl designed to prevent loneliness in a tech-driven world. This quiet, emotional film is sure to bring a tear to your eye. This film will be released only in theaters on Oct. 23, 2026.
Winter 2026 and Beyond
Jumanji: Open World

The fifth and final installment of the Jumanji series opens in theaters on Dec. 25, 2026. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan are back, and this time their avatars are out of the game and in the real world.
During the presentation, Johnson, Hart, and Black honored the memory of Robin Williams and alluded to an easter egg in the film. Williams starred in the original Jumanji in 1995. One of the dice used in that movie will be used in Jumanji: Open World.
This action comedy was directed by Jake Kasdan.
The Legend of Zelda
The studio did not present much information on this upcoming video game adaptation, but the crowd roared with excitement over the anticipation. The Legend of Zelda is being directed by Wes Ball and is set to star Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda.
This fantasy adventure film is set to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse
The third installment to the Spider-Verse trilogy promises to be the most emotional of the films and visually ambitious. This animated, action-adventure film is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson. Will Miles save his father and change his canon event? Find out in theaters on June 18, 2027.
Helldivers
Sony continued the video game adaptation trend with the announcement of Helldivers, directed by Justin Lin, starring Jason Momoa. The film is coming on the heels of the success of Helldivers 2.
This character-driven story was described as action-heavy and satirical. Production will begin in the coming weeks. Currently, there is no additional information for the film, but it is slated for an exclusive theatrical release on Nov. 10, 2027.
Buds
After the success of Goat, Sony Pictures Animation is expanding its catalog with Buds. This animated comedy is about the secret life of plants and one bud’s defiance of the biggest of all plant rules, “do not talk to humans!” Think “Toy Story” but botanical.
Make your way to the theaters on Dec. 22, 2027, to catch the secret life of plants while they observe humans.
The Nightingale
Sony announced another Oscar-bait film. The Nightingale is an adaptation of a historical fiction novel by Kristin Hannah. The film, starring Elle and Dakota Fanning, centers on two sisters struggling to survive during the German occupation of World War II.
The film, directed by Michael Morris and is slated to release exclusively in theaters Feb. 12, 2027.
The Beatles
Stay tuned for more information on this upcoming four-film cinematic event. Each film will focus on the story of each band member. The film stars Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.
Sam Mendes is directing the four-part biopic, and it is slated to release exclusively in theaters in April of 2028.
With crowd-pleasing IP like Spider-Man and Jumanji, partnered with comedies, horror titles, and prestige projects like The Social Reckoning and Klara and the Sun, Sony’s commitment to storytelling, cultural event films, and the theatrical experience is rather ambitious. If the crowd’s reaction was any indication, exhibitors are ready to meet that ambition.
