SDCC Hall H 2016: Guardians of the Galaxy 2

SDCC Hall H 2016: Guardians of the Galaxy 2All of Saturday in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 was one for the record books, but Marvel definitely put their best foot forward and delivered some of the weekend’s top preview content. Eventually, the time came in the Marvel panel for the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy 2. James Gunn hopped out on stage and started pumping the crowd up with some introduction and after a little while, a part of Hall H lit up and the Ravagers came pouring into the room. They continued to create a scene by interacting with fans and finally making their way up onto the stage only to take the seats meant for the cast, mocking them with impressions until Gunn shooed them off stage to make way for the real stars.

Trailer & Preview Scene

The Hall H crowd got to see two clips during the panel; the first was part of a fun scene that featured Rocket, Yondu and baby Groot breaking out of the Ravagers prison. Yondu tries to get baby Groot to retrieve his mohawk so he can use and control his arrow, but Groot doesn’t seem to fully understand and keeps bringing more and more ridiculous items back. Finally they manage to breakout and so starts a montage of Yondu’s arrow weaving its way around various rooms and through the Ravager bodies. They make their way onto the ship’s bridge and the three slo-mo walk across to Fleetwood Mac’s “Come A Little Bit Closer” while bodies rain down all around. The scene was exactly what I would have expected from the film and was extremely playful with the comedic lightheartedness found in the first movie. Baby Groot standing all of a foot or two tall in his tiny Ravager outfit was the cutest thing I saw all day in Hall H.

The second video was the first trailer for Guardian of the Galaxy 2 that burned through different scenes and footage to give us a picture of what else is coming. The Guardians are now well-known across the universe and finding a job seems to be no problem at all. The trailer compiled a bunch of clips to give us a glimpse into the various places we will travel in the upcoming movie. The group fights a space beast, Yondu is a part of the gang, Golden Ayesha will be featured, Mantis looks great, and the identity of Star-Lord’s father (played by Kurt Russell) has finally been revealed to be Ego!

Theme Park Ride

As if this weren’t enough, there was an additional announcement from Kevin Feige about a new ride coming to Disney California Adventure Park called Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! The ride will transform The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror into the Collector’s collection room where he is showing off his newest prize; the Guardians. Fans will have the chance to help their favorite characters escape the Collector’s clutches in Summer 2017!

Everything for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 looked phenomenal and it seems like the motion picture is only going to improve on what was established in the first film. All of the footage shown in Hall H was top notch and exciting. Baby Groot was one of the greatest things to see incorporated and learning the identity of Peter’s father was a really interesting development considering Ego is normally depicted as a purple planet with a beard. Needless to say, James Gunn knows the exact tone he wants these movies to have and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 looks pretty fantastic and cannot get here soon enough!
