Captain Marvel’s staying on Target. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel is zeroing in on a director, and the top three contenders have been announced.
Taken from a list that includes Jennifer Kent, director of the breakout Indie Horror The Babadook, and Jennifer Yuh, director of Kung Fu Panda 2, the top 3 Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria are the top three titans ready to tell the story. The next step is apparently preparing a treatment based on the script by Nicole Pearlmen (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve. (Inside Out).
Fans might remember that Brie Larson is attached to star as Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA becomes fused with an alien. While her origin story is probably going to be rewritten ever so slightly, Carol has a notable and loyal fan following, so the director has to take care with her particular story something that these ladies seem more then capable of.
Caro directed 2002’s Whale Rider. She followed that up with North Country a rape drama centered in coal mining country. She’s was also behind McFarland USA and The Zookeepers Wife staring Jessica Chastain.
Glatter is the primary director behind Homeland. Hailing from television, her credits include Ray Donovan, ER, The Newsroom, Mad Men, and The West Wing. Glatter is a notable contender, as she’s up for an Emmy for Outstanding Director at this year’s award ceremony.
Finally, while Scafaria might seem like an outlier she follows a lot of Marvel’s patterns made famous with someone like James Gunn and the Russo Brothers. Her first writing credit was Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, and she wrote and made her feature directorial debut with Seeking a Friend at the End of the World starring Steve Carrell and Keira Knightly. She also wrote and directed The Meddler starring Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne, released by Sony Pictures earlier this year.
Sources caution that more names might come forward, but these three top contenders all have something in common – spotlighting female led productions and dramas. The care being taken with Marvel’s production is heartening and it looks like Carol Danvers is in good hands.
