After the recent official confirmation that Brie Larson will be playing Carol Danvers in the future Captain Marvel movie, news for the film has slowly began to make its way onto the internet. Today is has been revealed that the MCU adaptation of Captain Marvel will have a different origin story from the traditional comics version.
In the comics, Carol Danvers shares a similar back story to DC’s Hal Jordan a.k.a. Green Lantern. While it’s not necessarily a problem to have mirroring back stories, changing the Captain Marvel origin will keep the character unique to Marvel and avoid unnecessary fan comparisons. Hopefully the writers keep Danver’s militaristic background somewhat intact because it really sets up the foundation for the character’s personality and mindset.
The positive takeaway about this situation is that one of the screenwriters for Captain Marvel is Nicole Perlman, who has worked on Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor. She is no stranger to dealing with Marvel superhero properties and clearly has a good sense for how to stay true to the characters when carefully shaping a story around them. If the on screen characters that fans love and cherish are true to their comic counterparts, there shouldn’t be a problem with altering an origin story.
Knowing that the Captain Marvel origin story is going to worry a lot of dedicated fans, but only time will tell whether or not it was worth it. Hopefully the character can still be brought to life with the same strong personality and leadership qualities she displays in the comics. Captain Marvel is a big movie for Marvel because it will be their first MCU installment with a single female lead, and she is such a beloved character to fans, it only adds to the pressure to get this film right from the start.
What do you think about the choice to change up Captain Marvel’s origin story? Is it necessary or will it jeopardize the character?
