It was announced today that Disney Interactive would be shutting down both of it’s Avengers Alliance games on all platforms. As of today they will not allow any new in-game purchases or downloads of either game, but will keep the games active until September 30th.
They gave their reasoning for the closure over on the official support page for the games “The decision was difficult to make, but we feel it’s best to focus our energy and resources into making new games and digital experiences for our fans and community. As always, we use our portfolio of brands to differentiate our content, and we seek to develop the most creative and innovative products in the world. We greatly appreciate all of the amazing engagement, passion and commitment to our game.”
The weirdest part of all of this is that Avengers Alliance 2 is only a little more than 6 months old and is already being taken off of the market. Having played both of these games since around when they roughly started I am kind of bummed that my two SHIELD Agents now have to go into early retirement, but with Avengers Alliance 1 it makes sense for it to be shut down since the player base had already left or moved on to the sequel after 4 years of being online. On the upside the shutdown will not be affecting other Marvel games Disney Interactive has.
In light of this there are still a lot of fun Marvel mobile games out there like Marvel Contest of Champions or Avengers Academy and even Marvel Puzzle Quest. Avengers Academy in fact has a pretty big event going on right now involving characters from the future Defenders Netflix show which you can learn more about by going here. These will be sticking around for the forseeable future and for more Marvel Gaming news and updates check back here!
