Plot: Marc Spector’s quest to save his friend, Crawly, continues as he finds himself captured by Egyptian guards and meeting, Anput, the wife of Anubis. Meanwhile, the flashbacks of Marc’s past continue as we learn what events lead to Marc meeting his longtime friend, Jean-Paul a.k.a. Frenchie.
Story: The present story takes place in a realm called Elsewhere (according to the caption) but Anput tells Marc it’s name is Overvoid. Marc’s insanity is the main focus of Lemire’s run and this realm is a perfect setting for it. One example is how the prison guards dress like they are in Ancient Egypt but they also ride on giant bugs.
Meanwhile, the other half of the story continues to show us what events lead Marc to become Moon Knight. One flashback shows the reader how Marc met Jean-Paul, a.k.a. Frenchie. For those still new to Moon Knight, Frenchie serves as Marc’s right hand man and pilot. One of the things I’ve loved about this series is the use of Moon Knight’s support cast. During this title, each person played a helpful role to Marc’s journey. For example, currently Marc is trying to save his friend, Crawly. In the first arc, Crawly paid the price for Anubis getting Marc and his friends out of trouble.
Plus another good thing about the flashbacks is how Jeff Lemire provides a fresh perspective to Moon Knight’s origin. One example is Khonshu following Marc and guiding him to become Moon Knight.
Art: Greg Smallwood and Jordie Bellaire create fantastic images in this issue. My favorite is the design of the night sky in the Elsewhere realm. The sharp colors of the sky are great contrast to the colors of the characters which help them come to life on the page. Another great example of great coloring is when some of the flashbacks take place during a sunset. Also the white border on the pages really help the panels of the story stand out in this issue.
Verdict: Jeff Lemire gives us a fresh take on Moon Knight’s origin. Plus Greg Smallwood and Jordie Bellaire bring the story to life with their fantastic artwork. Overall, the creative team’s combined efforts create a Moon Knight title that is worth reading.
