Squirrel Girl And The New Warriors Headed To FreeForm!

Marvel’s television properties are amazing.  From Agents of SHIELD to the soon to arrive The Inhumans Marvel is pushing the boundaries of it’s television properties.  Today they’ve hit another milestone, announcing that the planned New Warriors series is going straight to series on Freeform.  According to Marvel, the series will mark Marvel Television’s first foray into comedy.  The young adult series will consist of 10 30 minute episodes, slated to debut in 2018.  The shorter seasons seem to fit in with fans hopes that superhero series will have shorter run times.

Marvel’s New Warriors are being billed as “Not quite super, not quite heroes” according to Marvel.

“Marvel’s New Warriors” is about six young people with powers living and working together.  With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world… Even if the world isn’t ready.  “Marvel’s New Warriors” is about that time in your life when you first enter adulthood and feel like you can do everything and nothing at once — except in this world, bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.

The series will feature fan favorite squirrel girl.  Doreen Green will be portrayed as a tough and optimistic fan girl.  She’s a natural leader who believes in other people and teaches them to “stand up and be themselves”. According to Marvel.  Freeform also has Cloak and Dagger forthcoming from the network.

“Freeform’s mission is to deliver incredible content to young adults and Marvel Television seamlessly aligns with that mission–we couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with them on ‘Marvel’s New Warriors,’” said Freeform EVP Karey Burke, head of programming and development.  Marvel TV head Jeph Leob added, “Marvel’s New Warriors’ have always been fan favorites and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well.” he went on to praise both Cloak and Dagger and Freeform’s relationship with Marvel, “After the Amazing experience we’ve had with Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes.”

The series will be executive produced by Jeph Leob, head of Marvel Television, and Jim Chory, executive producer of The Defenders and the upcoming Punisher series.
