While Marvel has dived into many different genres on both the big and small screen, they’ve never really done something that they’ve referred to as a comedy. That’s about to change next year though when New Warriors debuts on Freeform. The network ordered the series, which focuses on a young superhero team featuring Squirrel Girl, Speedball, Night Thrasher and many more, which Marvel referred to as a “new comedic live-action adaptation” of the popular series. But what took Marvel so long to get around to doing a comedy? Speaking with Deadline, Marvel TV’s SVP of Original Programming Karim Zriek stated that it “took us time to dip a foot into comedy because it has to be right.”
While it seems that Marvel wants to do more comedies, fans shouldn’t worry that they’ll go overboard with them. Zreik also seemingly took a slight jab at NBC’s now cancelled Powerless stating Marvel is “never going to do an office comedy, you don’t need that.” Ouch. But he’s not wrong. Are you excited to see what Marvel has in store when New Warriors debuts on Freeform next year? Are there any other Marvel properties you think would make a good comedy series?
