We’re only a few weeks out from seeing the first two episodes Marvel’s Inhumans on IMAX screens, which were directed by Death Race 2 & The Marine 2 director Roel Reiné. But why did Marvel seek out this particular director when they decided to bring the first two episodes of the series to IMAX theaters? Speaking with CNET, Reiné revealed that Marvel chose him for the job due to his experience when it came to making low-budget action movies.
“I think they liked me for the job because I was able with my action movies to shoot in a very short time, or with very low budgets, action that looks like a big-budget movie. It was not a feature film, it was a TV episode, but they still wanted to have the scope.”
Another reason it seems they chose him was due to time being a major factor. Television is filmed on a much tighter schedule than feature films. Where as production will last for months for two hour films, television episodes only get a matter of days to get one 45 minute episode.
“The schedule was super-tight. I had TV schedule time to shoot it with Imax cameras, 20 days to shoot two episodes. It’s nerve-wracking but I come from a low-budget film world, so 20 days for me is luxury.”
The director then went on to comment on what it was like working with Marvel, having heard “horror stories” about them but revealed it was “very collaborative”.
“There was always a Marvel executive around me. Just to make sure that whatever I did, or whatever we did together, would tie in with other characters in other universes, in other comics, in other series or movies. They’re very protective. These people are very passionate about their product and about characters and about doing the best version of everything.”
