“With The Inhumans coming soon to theaters details continue to emerge about the nature of the family drama that will make up the bulk of the show. Black Bolt, Medusa, and Maximus will be in the thick of a number of things – all while trying to lead their people into an uncertain future. It sounds like things might be getting even crazier for the royal family with an added dose of romantic tension between Maximus and Medusa. Star Iwan Rheon sat down with Collider to break down just what was going on with his character and share his excitement for the show. From what he discussed, things sound crazy.
I think the relationship between him and Medusa is very interesting as well because in this story that they were very good friends when they were younger and I think Maximus always had a bit of a thing for her, thinking that you know one day maybe they’d be together and maybe even be on the thrown together.
Comic readers should start getting excited, the friendship between Maximus and Medusa is shaping up to be a key focus of the Once and Future King storyline. The two aren’t connected by any stretch of the imagination but knowing that there was a “woman” involved adds a nice dimension to the Shakespearian tragedy of the “brothers at war”. The first clip even shows a real tension between the two. (It’s also the first time we’ve seen Medusa’s hair in action.) Rheon hinted that this is a bit of a “sore spot” for the “mad” inhuman.
For her to go off with Black Bolt is kind of always kind of been a bit of an issue for him as it’s obviously hurt so that’s going to be a very interesting relationship to develop but they’re amicable. It’s not that they’re shouting to each other and he’s not like, ‘Oh I hate you.’ They’re part of the family and I think that’s what’s interesting is how each character is part of his family and how they respond.
To end up being on “good terms” with a woman who you had feelings for who married your brother really sets the stage for some really interesting tension, particularly since Maximus’s personal history leaves him with a bit of a sore spot regarding his family and his brother – not to mention how he’s treated in Inhuman society.
Their relationship has been fraught with tension throughout the comics with Maximus eventually escalating his behavior against Medusa. Will that come into play in the show? It’s something very interesting (and frankly terrifying). to think about. This is shaping up to be a really interesting plot line with some nods – unintentional or otherwise – back to the comics. Are you getting excited? Think that Maximus should have gotten together with Medusa instead of Black Bolt (hard to imagine but an intriguing line of speculation!)
