Spider-Man Homecoming Box Office

BOX OFFICE: Spider-Man: Homecoming Surpasses The Amazing Spider-Man Franchise

Sony & Marvel Studios Spider-Man: Homecoming swung into theaters in China this weekend and is off to a stellar start. The Jon Watts directed film webbed up a $21.6M opening day which combined with it’s Thursday night grosses bring it’s unofficial total to $23M. The opening is a third best for superhero films in the market behind Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. This pushes the film’s worldwide total past $770M and sets it right between the worldwide grosses of Spider-Man 2 ($783M) and The Amazing Spider-Man ($758M) making it the fourth highest-grossing Spider-Man film to date.

Homecoming is on track to likely beat the original Spider-Man ($821M) but it’s going to be an uphill battle when it comes to beating Spider-Man 3 ($891M) in order to become the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. However, the latest reboot will be a bigger success for the studio when compared to the latter as it featured a much smaller budget. Ka-ching. While the film will definitely web up a strong opening weekend in China, it might face some competition with War For The Planet Of The Apes set to open next weekend.
