The New Mutants Director Josh Boone Confirms Film’s Setting; Warlock & Karma To Be In Future Films

While we got our first creepy look at the Josh Boone directed X-Men spinoff The New Mutants yesterday, details are being kept pretty under wraps when it comes to the film. Early on it was rumored that we would see Professor X & a young Storm making an appearance in the film, which lead many to assume that the film would be set in the past much like the mainline X-Men series. Well, it appears that isn’t the case as director Josh Boone has confirmed in a chat with IGN that the film “takes place in present day.” But will it all be set withing the asylum? Boone wouldn’t give much away but did state the following:

I don’t … It’s hard for me to say. I’ll say it’s a ‘rubber reality’ horror movie. So the place they’re in becomes more spacious when it needs to…

While the film is definitely a more “self-contained” X-Men film (which have been some of the best so far), is there a chance we could see other characters from the X-Men universe appear? While the director stated that there are things that he couldn’t talk about, he did stated that The New Mutants is “connected to and a part of the X-Men universe” and that the film will “continue to be a part of the X-Men universe and will be a part of that as it opens up in the next movies and all that.” And he definitely already has some plans for the sequel when it comes to other mutants appearing.

Every video complains online about characters that aren’t in it right now. I will say we’re going to introduce new characters in the next movie as well. Characters like Karma and Warlock, and all that will be in future movies.

I’ve dug what I’ve seen so far and really liking what I’ve been hearing from Boone. Definitely cannot wait to see what the crew behind The New Mutants has put together here. Even if I don’t like the film though, I’m going to need a sequel to happen simply to get Warlock on the screen. What about you? Let us know what you think about Boone’s comments in the section below.

Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.
