What superhero fatigue? Marvel Studios Thor Ragnarok has exceeded expectations at the box office this weekend and opened to a Hulk-sized $121M. This is much bigger than earlier projections this weekend and surpassed tracking for the film which had it at $100M-$120M heading into the weekend. And it’s worth nothing that these are still projections and the film could see an uptick in business pushing it even higher come tomorrow morning. Ragnarok‘s Saturday was at $44.4M which was only off 5% from its $46.8M opening (which includes the $14.5M Thursday previews). If you take that number out, the film’s Saturday is actually up +37%.
Worldwide the God Of Thunder’s threequel is also ahead of expectations with $427M. Going into the weekend it was believed the film would be somewhere near the $400M range when it was all said and done. This number pushes the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the $13 billion mark worldwide and $5 billion stateside. If the film holds strong in the coming weeks, it’s definitely got a shot at crossing the $900M mark which no other superhero film has this year.
