Marvel Entertainment and FoxNext Games are preparing for a new mission and it’s one that requires five strong Marvel characters working as a unit. Marvel Strike Force brings together some of Marvel’s most recognizable characters for a new mobile RPG experience.
According to Variety, Marvel Strike Force will feature heroes like the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and more. Villains are also set to join the fray as playable characters. In addition to completing various missions from Nick Fury, the characters will also interact with one another over the course of every stage. The game is being developed by FoxNext Games through its Aftershock studio in Los Angeles. The game has been in development for over two years, with the Variety report citing that over 200,000 developer hours have been put into this game’s creation. The Aftershock studio is also currently working on a separate mobile game set to feature the characters of James Cameron’s “Avatar.”
“We talk about the game in terms of fantasy sports,” FoxNext Games president of studios Aaron Loeb said. “We’re enabling the player to have their fantasy draft of characters from the Marvel Universe.”
Marvel has a healthy number of games under its umbrella. Marvel Contest of Champions and Marvel Avengers Academy are both available in the mobile space, while Marvel characters are currently doing battle in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. They’re set to spring into action later through a deal with Square Enix, which will center around the core Avengers. This news also comes in the same week that Disney announced it would sever ties with Gazillion Games, which will result in the closure of free-to-play MMORPG Marvel Heroes.
Marvel Strike Force will be free-to-play and feature in-app purchases, though upgrades and gear can be collected through natural gameplay. The game is set to release in 2018. Pre-registration is open now through the Marvel Strike Force website.
