Agents of SHIELD returned to the small screen last month as the fifth season kicked off the major future-space saga, raising the stakes more than ever. But the bigger question that a lot of fans are wondering is whether or not the beloved Marvel series will be back for a sixth season.
ABC president Channing Dungey spoke with reporters today at the ongoing Television Critics Association about what’s coming up for the network this year. During the executive session, the president addressed the future of Marvel TV with Agents of SHIELD as well as Inhumans.
When it came to the long-running spy series, Dungey wouldn’t rule out a potential sixth season, stating that she is waiting to hear the producer’s plan for Season 6.
“The creative this season, I honestly think, has been the strongest its ever been. We’ve been really excited about what the producers have been talking about for the second half of the season. I’m really looking forward to hearing them come in and talk about what their ideas would be for season 6, so we can make a better determination about whether we’re going to order another season or not.”
Then there is Inhumans, the latest Marvel drama to join the ABC network this TV season. Unfortunately, with its lackluster numbers and poor critical reception, Dungey wasn’t as optimistic about Black Bolt and his Royal Family coming back for a second year. While she didn’t say it had been officially canceled, the ABC president stressed that they were disappointed with the ratings.
“It didn’t perform for us at the level that we would’ve wanted. We haven’t made any official decision yet about what we’re going to pick up in May, but I will say that the numbers, unfortunately, were less exciting for us than we hoped they would be.”
