ADVANCE REVIEW: Lucifer Season 4

DISCLAIMER: This is a spoiler-free advance review of the first few episodes of Netflix’s Lucifer Season 4. 

After the major bombshell that was the Season 3 finale where Chloe (Lauren German) discovered Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) major secret that he is, in fact, the devil, fans have waited forever for the continuation on the hot cliffhanger. With the move to Netflix, the DC Vertigo drama is continuing the epic tale of the devil in L.A. and his story with the beloved detective. To begin with, as it has been teased elsewhere, the show hasn’t done any drastic changes by joining Netflix, which is deeply appreciated.

While there may be a few quippy cussing here and there, the show remains to feel true to itself. The only significant difference to take away from the first few episodes is that the writers can now fit in more stories into each episode which is only a plus. We still have our “weekly” cases as always, in fact, look out for an episode that will mention the word “case” so many times that you’ll be able to have a fun drinking game with it. But to make it absolutely clear: Lucifer is back bigger, better, hotter, and devil-ier.

Without revealing too much, if you’re expecting some major tension between Lucifer and Chloe, then you’re definitely getting what you wished for. Given the massive secret that Chloe is having to take in, it’s natural for her to have questions and concern. In fact, it gives some of German’s most powerful performances in the whole series, so be ready to bring tissues. It will come with some twist and surprises, but Chloe and Lucifer’s relationship is going to go through A LOT in the first few installments of Season 4.

One of the characters that take a darker turn in Season 4 is, without doubt, Kevin Alejandro’s Dan Espinoza, following the tragic death of Charlotte Richards (Tricia Helfer) in Season 3. We can’t reveal too much, but do expect for Dan to have a powerful season as he comes to grip with Charlotte’s passing. In addition to that, Maze (Lesley Ann-Brandt) and he have quite the adventures together in Season 4 from what has been preview thus far.

As Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) is back in his full glory, his relationship with everyone’s favorite therapist Linda (Rachael Harris) is at its highest with the new season. For anyone who loves themselves some Amenadiel/Linda, will be quite happy for what’s coming this season. It has always been one of the show’s deeper dynamics and the fourth season doesn’t change that at all. If anything, it amplifies it. In addition to that, Maze and Linda’s BFF relationship will put a smile on your face.

The new season also introduces another religious figure in the form of Eve (Inbar Lavi) who makes it from heaven back to Earth. Just like Ellis, German and the many talented actors we watch on screen, Lavi’s charisma is a delight to watch. From a religious standpoint, you find yourself being fascinated with her viewpoints of things, especially her backstory. As for Ellis and Lavi’s dynamic on-screen, it’s a lot of fun and offers some interesting directions for Lucifer as a character.

Someone who can’t be forgotten is Ella (Aimee Garcia) whose struggle is incredibly universal this season. While many of the characters have gotten to go deep in past seasons, Season 4 is definitely the year for Ella as she looks into herself a lot more compared to Season 2 and 3. Despite the show consisting mostly of human characters, Ella has always felt the most human out of all them with her view at life and the warmth she brings into the group. With her new struggles in Season 4, Ella becomes even more relatable.

The show has always played with religion and without giving it away: viewers should be ready for a doozy level increase of that in the new season which will be seen as both fascinating, but also intimidating. But all-in-all, it does make the show go into a deeper level with the religious aspects than it has in past seasons while still allowing for the procedural aspect to be at the center. As we said before, the move to Netflix hasn’t altered the show’s tone, but only allowed it to tell more stories.

Overall, from the new season’s first six hours, Season 4 is, without doubt, the Devil’s best season thus far. It continues to tell powerful stories with this gang that makes you think hard and invest more into these characters that we’ve been following for all these years.
