The Marvel Report had the opportunity to speak with Agents of SHIELD cast members Natalia Cordova-Buckley (Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez) and Henry Simmons (Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie) in a roundtable interview at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
This season has found Mack and Yo-Yo struggling to repair their relationship, though the actors were surprised the two broke up to begin with.
“I thought it should have been a process,” said Simmons. “I didn’t agree with the break-up thing.”
“What I would have liked to have seen was tension,” Simmons added. “I think that’s more interesting for me. Tension because a man’s trying to do his job and he’s trying to hold his relationship together and here’s a strong, independent woman who needs to do what she needs to do.”
When asked about the possibility of revisiting their characters after the show ends, especially with an upcoming Ghost Rider show with Gabe Luna in the works, the actors were open to the idea.
“I would love that,” said Buckley. “I love Gabe. I think he deserves this as an actor…So, I would love to go and do that, whether it be as Yo-Yo or another character, and work with him and the team again.”
But even if we don’t see more of their characters, the representation they’ve added to the MCU will leave a lasting legacy.
“I never thought that your career as an actor could be so moving in terms of representation and reflection for other people,” said Buckley. “And that’s been really profoundly touching for me to know.”
Agents of SHIELD airs Fridays on ABC.
