Just announced at this year’s SDCC was Marvel’s entire Phase Four timeline consisting of five new movies and five new, original shows for Disney+. One of those highly anticipated shows is WandaVision. Both characters have a lot more to offer the MCU and here are a couple of things to look out for when the series airs in 2021.
Wanda’s Origin Story
Even though the name hasn’t been used in the movies because the rights formerly belonged to Fox, comic fans know Wanda Maximoff better as Scarlet Witch. Now with the rights reacquired after the Disney-Fox merger, it looks like we’ll be exploring that alter ego more. Plenty of hints have been given about her alias: red outfits, red hair (some times), and her powers that emit a red, glowing light whenever she takes down the bad guys. If there is a deeper meaning behind her name aside from her fondness for the color red, we’ll find out in the series.
Place in the MCU Timeline
With the announcement of WandaVision at SDCC, it was also revealed that the series would supposedly take place after Endgame. However, previous comments from Elizabeth Olsen Variety allude to the fact the show could also include some alternate reality timelines. This would also provide an explanation for how we get Vision back.
The Return of Vision
It might be universally agreed upon that the death of Vision in Avengers: Infinity War was one of the most devastating things to witness in the MCU. However, with the announcement of WandaVision, the one question that comes to mind is, “How can he come back?” He wasn’t dusted like the other Avengers, and the stone that kept him alive is destroyed forever. What isn’t being considered is the growing strength of Wanda’s powers. Exhibited in Avengers: Age of Ultron, her psychic and telekinetic powers were strong enough to destroy Ultron and his robotic army. By Infinity War, Wanda was able to hold off Thanos while destroying the Mind Stone at the same time. By Endgame, Wanda was able to overpower him, humiliating him to the point where he’d rather risk the lives of his army just so he could beat her. Phase 4 is the perfect opportunity to introduce her with the “chaotic magic” she possesses in the comics. These powers could be strong enough to reanimate Vision, and the last time we saw him was in Wakanda. With Shuri and Bruce’s help, Wanda could possess enough of the stone’s power to bring him back.
Monica Rambeau
Fans were first introduced to Monica Rambeau in Captain Marvel, played by the amazing Akira Akbar. Her character served as Carol’s guide back to discovering her past, as well as helping decide her iconic colors on her suit. Why is the introduction of grown-up Monica so huge? Having first been seen in the past, It means that she may have a greater role in the world of superheroes than originally thought. She could also serve the same purpose as she did in Captain Marvel: she could be a guide to help Wanda discover the origin of her name; maybe even help develop the crown and cape she’s synonymous for wearing in the comics. With the introduction of grown Monica Rambeau, it could also bring around her superhero alter ego, Spectrum. If that’s the case, WandaVision is sure to have a memorable trio saving the world.
Tie-In with Doctor Strange 2
Having been confirmed at SDCC that there will be a tie in between these two characters, WandaVision is set to premiere in the Spring of 2021, and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness set to follow May 7th, 2021. With the Sorcerer Supreme and the Scarlet Witch sharing the silver screen, questions addressing the Multiverse in the series will surely be answered in the movie. There may also have been a team-up teased for these two magicians at Comic-Con. Kevin Feige seemed to say during the presentation, “When you have a stronger sorcerer, it also helps when you have a strong witch, and the Scarlet Witch is appearing in the movie alongside her.” It’s possible Feige misspoke, but who could the other “her” be? The rumors from earlier in the year seem to be matching up with another sorceress established in the Doctor Strange lore, Clea. If this confirmation is true, Clea could potentially be making her way over to Wanda’s side of the multiverse as well.
Wanda’s Powers Growing (House of M)
This is just a potential route the series could go down; it may not even be brought up, but with how strong Wanda is and how she continues to evolve into the hero she is, her strength could not only help others, but it could harm as well. Her reality-altering powers started to grow with her in Avengers: Age of Ultron as she ended up messing with the minds of the Avengers, and later on joining them to take out Ultron and his army. In Avengers: Infinity War, Wanda was able to take out a majority of Thanos’s henchmen, destroy the Mind Stone as well as hold off Thanos. By Avengers: Endgame, the amount of pain and suffering Wanda had suffered allowed her to unleash her fury on Thanos, allowing her to overpower him. However, with this new series, could her powers be even stronger than last exhibited? What with the possible appearance of Mutants and crossover with the X-Men into the MCU, there could be a tie-in to the House of M, storyline, which would really show the true power of Wanda Maximoff.
Whether some of these ideas are brought into fruition right away, or prolonged until the hopes of a season two, WandaVision is the much-anticipated adventure for fans who have been wanting to know what happened to these two characters.
WandaVision is set to premiere on Disney+ Spring 2021.
