The Walt Disney Company has announced three new Marvel Studios shows for their Disney+ platform. Disney’s Expo kicked off with three surprises for future subscribers. The new series will join Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye on the network and in Marvel’s Phase 4.
D23Expo featured a look at the DisneyPlus streaming service, building on the momentum from Comic-Con 2019. The three new shows will focus on Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight. The studio revealed the show’s logos to critical and fan acclaim as well, giving people an idea of what to expect from the programs. Ms. Marvel has been a long-rumored project at Marvel, and She-Hulk and Moon Knight have topped the list of many Marvel fans most desired projects for live-action adaptations.
Marvel and Disney revealed that the shows, much like the shows previously announced, will have ramifications on the MCU at large. Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige announced that much like WandaVision the shows would tie directly into the MCU at large. All 7 projects will seemingly take place in Phase 4 of the MCU. Phase 4 is poised to be one of the largest programming slates in Marvel history.
“These shows will be on the same level of quality that you’ve come to expect from Marvel Studios,These will be both new and continuing stories, and one of the things we’re most excited about, is that these will be major storylines, set in the MCU, with ramifications that will be felt both through the other Disney Plus series we’re producing and our features on the big screen.”
Feige first confirmed a more firm connection between the MCU and it’s Disney+ counterparts at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 with WandaVision. The series, focusing on Scarlet Witch and The Vision, will tie into Doctor Strange’s Into the Multiverse of Madness. Presumably, these new programs will do the same. The Hollywood Reporter reported that British writer Bisha K Ali is in talks to run Ms. Marvel. No other showrunners or casting has been announced for any of the other series.
Disney’s announcement is more than an excellent programming slate. It’s a sign that studio executives are listening to fans desires. All three programs from Moon Knight to She-Hulk have been regularly discussed on social media. It’s an interesting move. One could argue that placating fans in such a way could backfire, with fans demanding certain things from the writers and the writers feeling beholden to the fans.
Marvel has struck an excellent balance with all of these things in other shows, however. From Ms. Marvel to She-Hulk, the studio loves it’s properties and loves its fans. Whatever the future holds for Disney+ and Phase 4 of the MCU Marvel has evolved into a partnership with its fans and there’s no limit to what the two can accomplish.
