Andy Serkis has shared that Tom Hardy is heavily involved in Venom 2‘s script. The new director of Venom 2 confirmed at the Television Critics Association Awards that Hardy has ideas about the script, as well as shared new details about the film.
Sony has a lot riding on the sequel to 2018’s surprise anti-hero hit. The film grossed $856 million at the box office, allowing Venom to anchor Sony’s universe of Marvel characters. Future films in the series include Morbius (2020) and rumored pictures such as Black Cat and Silver Sable, Kraven the Hunter and more.
According to Slashfilm and Serkis, the Venom sequel will see a lot of input from Hardy, who has become passionate about Eddie Brock and his journey. Serkis shared that he’s in the beginning stages of planning the film.
“I’m right at the beginning stages. I’ve got some very clear ideas about the journey I’d like to see visually and how we can take the characters into another dimension.”
Serkis went on the praise Hardy and his collaborators. Fans will remember that Hardy shared that 40 minutes of Venom had been cut, including some of his favorite scenes.
“Tom is very involved with the writing, with Kelly Marcel, of the new story – so it’s very much centered around their take. I’ve known Tom for many years and always admired him hugely as an actor and producer,” Serkis said. “We’ve always wanted to work together directly. I’m deeply excited to work with Tom Hardy and to work with all the great actors who are involved in it. It’s a fantastic franchise. I’m really honored to have been asked to direct it, and it feels like it’s a very contemporary story. I think it’s going to be hopefully an extraordinary piece of cinema.”
Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks) is returning to pen the sequel, with Tom Hardy confirmed to return as well. Michelle Williams is rumored to return as Anne Weying, Eddie Brock’s ex-fiancee, along with Woody Harrelson who should return as Cletus Kasady. With Williams taking a turn as She-Venom, anything could happen in Venom 2 from Carnage to other symbiotes.
Hardy has shared his passion for Venom and for making a film with the help of his oldest child. The actor’s performance won the hearts of critics and fans alike, despite falling short of films like the MCU. Either way, Sony is poised to build something different and the healthy sense of collaboration the studio has built behind the scenes points to Venom 2 being something truly scary and truly special.
