Sony is webbing up to hire Michelle MacLaren to direct a Spider-Woman film. For sometime, Sony has been looking to launch a female fronted film in their Spider-Verse. Now it appears that Spider-Woman will be getting her solo debut.
Michelle MacLaren has directed episodes of Breaking Bad and Game Of Thrones. Sony and Michelle are in talks currently. There is no official casting reports for the titled character, however, Alicia Vikander is a potentially going to be cast in the role, according to The Illuminerdi.
It’s unclear if this film will be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially since, the most known and popular version of Spider-Woman is Jessica Drew who was born and raised into Hydra and later turned Shield agent then Avenger. That version of Jessica Drew is also best friends with Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) in the comics. Jessica Drew has been a character that is often brought up in trying to figure out the live action right deals that the different studios have with the Marvel comics characters. Though Sony own’s live action rights to “Spider-Woman”, they do not own the live action rights to the Hydra turned Shield agent and then Avenger part of her origin story. This version of Jessica’s origin story has nothing to do with Peter Parker either.
There is a version of Jessica Drew who is a an actual clone of Peter Parker, but doesn’t have the pretty awesome Hydra back story. Unless Sony and Marvel Studios has worked a deal with using the more known version of Jessica Drew, we will most likely be seeing the Peter Parker female clone.
As as long time Jessica Drew fan, I personally hope that Sony and Marvel Studios has arranged a deal to have Jessica Miriam Drew in her raised in Hydra turned Shield gloriousness. Also who doesn’t want to see besties Jessica and Carol kicking major butt together?!
