According to Deadline, Olivia Wilde will be re-teaming with her Booksmart writing partner Katie Silberman to tackle an unknown Sony Marvel project. Deadline speculated that the film may be based on Spider-Woman, but no one at Sony has confirmed it.
If true, Spider-Woman would join a Sony project slate that includes films being developed featuring Madame Webb, Black Cat, and Silver Sable.
Wilde made her directorial debut with 2019’s Booksmart about a pair of teen girls celebrating their final year of high school. The film was nominated for multiple awards including a Golden Globe.
Wilde since then has continued her A-List streak, taking on several acting and directing projects. Next, she will direct and play a supporting role in Don’t Worry, Darling, alongside other comic book film veterans Chris Pine and Florence Pugh.
Sony’s Universe Of Marvel Characters is slowly growing, and the studio is building up its library of characters. With a focus on developing minor Marvel characters and taking them in new directions, Sony has projects based on Morbius, Venom, and other Spider-Man characters.
Wilde’s project puts her in the company of a number of women taking on superhero films. She joins Marvel directors Nia DaCosta, slated to helm Captain Marvel 2, and Chloe Zhao, tackling The Eternals.
Marvel has been attempting to diversify itself in front of and behind the camera. Wilde’s project is the latest effort in changing the superhero landscape for the better.
