With WandaVision set to premiere this week, fans have seen countless trailers and teasers all over social media. The latest ones seem to tease Wanda’s twin children, Wiccan and Speed.
Who are Wiccan and Speed? And what could their role be in WandaVision and the future of the MCU? Read on to find out!
Wiccan
Also known by his actual name, Billy Kaplan, Wiccan is presumably one of the adorable, bouncing babies that Wanda and Vision hold in several of the trailers.
With Billy making his first appearance in Young Avengers #1, fans that know the source material might be wondering if the show goes with the comic version of him or a new version to fit in with the MCU. Either way, he is going to be a powerful character. It is also unclear how exactly Billy will get his powers. Would he inherit Wanda’s mutant gene? Or, because he was reincarnated, will he get them by some other means? Two questions fans would love to have answered.
Speaking of his powers, Billy takes after his mama, being a ridiculously strong and mighty chaos magic-user. His biggest one being reality-warping, Wiccan can change his surroundings, being able to warp and control various forms of magic and spiritual energy. This power seems to go hand in hand with the theme of WandaVision. Other powers that are like his mothers are telekinesis, flight and concussive force blast. With other powers like electrokinesis, pyrokinesis, clairvoyance, and conjuring, Billy is a Mage not to be messed with.
Speed
Thomas Shepherd, Billy’s twin brother also has powers referenced in the trailer. When we see Vision go for a falling object in one of the many trailers, he has super speed just like his son from the comics Tommy.
Like his brother Billy, he too is a mutant. Unlike his mother, he takes after his equally fast Uncle, Pietro Maximoff and has superhuman speed. Superhuman stamina, agility, reflexes and durability are also in his arsenal of powers. Two powers fans might want to see on the show are molecular acceleration and accelerated perception. Exploding objects and slow motion would certainly fit the vibe of the show, especially in the horror elements.
Making his first appearance in Young Avengers #10, fans might be interested to see how the twins differ if they appear in the MCU. And his relationship with Wanda might be something to watch for as well. Will she favor him less because he doesn’t have the same powers as Billy? Will Wanda accidentally distance herself from her own son because seeing Tommy’s powers will remind her of what she lost? It would be interesting to see how this dynamic plays out.
Potential Role on the Show
“Well we just don’t know what to expect.”
Wanda was absolutely right. Fans have absolutely no idea what to expect. So much about WandaVision is still being kept under wraps. And with Marvel hyping up WandaVision as their most anticipated project, it is surely not to disappoint.
To most fans who know Billy and Tommy through the comics, they must be wondering one pretty big thing: Will the show address how the twins are created?
Marvel could play if off as this: Wanda has become so distraught about losing everything that she wanted the one thing she knew that has been proven to bring millions of people joy: motherhood So, somehow, with her own powers, she manifests the twins. However, with Wanda potentially losing her mind, trying to keep herself in this perfect reality she has set for herself, the twins may end up being the reason she loses her mind. Wanda losing her ability to concentrate is definitely hinted at in the newest trailers where we see the surroundings and the people inside her new reality glitching.
Another possible but less likely plot point could be that when Wanda has the twins, maybe there is a spike in her powers. With SWORD monitoring unusual events on the show, and keeping tabs, potentially, once the twins arrive, maybe it’s Darcy and Monica who pick up on the spike, and try to reach out. And maybe that is why Monica is brought into Wanda’s reality.
Young Avengers?
Aside from fans knowing that Billy and Tommy are Wanda and Vision’s sons, they also know them as a part of the Young Avengers.
With the twins being introduced on the show, Disney+ introducing projects like Ironheart, the recasting of Cassie Lang, the potential of Hulkling showing up in Captain Marvel 2, Patriot making an appearance in Falcon and The Winter Soldier as well as America Chavez, Kate Bishop being one of the leads in Hawkeye, a potential to see young Loki in his own series, and hopefully a reappearance from Harley Keener (the kid from Iron Man 3 at Tony’s funeral) as IronLad…It definitely looks like with all of these names, Marvel wants to do a Young Avengers project.
Whether that project actually happens in the next phase, remains to be seen.
Wanda is the face of Phase Four in the MCU and plenty of people are excited to see her character grow. With nine episodes, there is plenty of room for lots of surprises, twists and turns. And with WandaVision merging perfectly into Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the possibility of Wanda becoming a (hopefully redeemable) villain is extremely high.
