Heartstopper is set to release its third season on Netflix. The much-beloved series was created and written by Alice Oseman, who also penned the webcomic and graphic novel of the same name. The show’s ensemble boasts a diverse ensemble of LGBT+ characters, many of whom become paired up in romantic relationships.
In recent years, many new Netflix series have failed to last beyond one or two seasons. Conversely, Heartstopper has been able to maintain a new season annually and keep its audience emotionally invested without getting put on the cancellation chopping block.
Heartstopper season 3 is able to unlock new layers of storytelling for its characters precisely because it has been given the all-too-rare gift of making it to season 3. Each character and romantic relationship not only has a seasonal arc, but a development and progression that builds on what has transpired in seasons 1 and 2.
The Jonathan Bailey Cameo
Actor Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) makes a small cameo appearance after making it known that he was a fan of the series. Bailey plays historian Jack Maddox, Charlie’s celebrity crush. Although Maddox only appears in one episode of the series (excluding a couple of still images on social media), Bailey brings every bit of charm to his scene.
Tara and Darcy’s Self-Exploration Era
Season 2 ended with a harsh revelation: Darcy’s mother is homophobic.
Mercifully, season 3 sees Darcy moved out of that toxic home life. Darcy and Tara have thematic overlap in their seasonal arcs. Each of them have relatively calmer storylines in which they are given the space to explore themselves. New layers are uncovered as they seek to better understand their own identities and hopes for the future. Throughout this, they remain steadfast in their romantic and emotional support for one another.
The New Depths of Tori Spring
Following the memorable high point of Tori threatening Charlie’s older brother Daniel when he is homophobic to Charlie, season 3 delivers a deeper exploration of her character. Whether she’s connecting to an endearing new love interest or asserting her steadfast devotion to her brother, Tori more than proves herself as a stand-out of this ensemble.
A More Expressive Isaac
Isaac had just begun to explore the concept of asexuality in season 2. Now that he is more self-assured in his identity, he emerges as a more expressive version of himself. Instead of sitting idly by among the more loquacious members of his friend group, Isaac begins to take more action when he observes that a friend is in need.
Elle and Tao: A True Power Couple
Tao has a major glo-up in season 3. His transformation is one of the most drastic when compared to season 1. Previously, he was more emotionally volatile in lashing out when he felt abandoned. Eventually, the revealed this habit developed because of the death of his father. Now that he is more self-aware of this tendency, he has transformed significantly.
Elle begins to become more aware of the epidemic of UK transphobia. Understandably, this weighs heavily on her mental health. Remarkably, Tao goes above and beyond to prove himself as a loving emotional support system. The support goes beyond the superficial “good boyfriend” archetype. Without question, the love and support in the Tao/Elle romance is one of the stand-out highlights of season 3.
Charlie and Nick’s LOVE Story
A significant portion of the dramatic storytelling in season 3 focuses on Charlie’s struggles. Season 2 revealed his eating disorder and self-harm. The burden of these struggles weighs heavily on Charlie and those who love him. Heartstopper season 3 is very particular about its balance. Overall, it is a scripted work of fiction that entertains its audience. However, it also functions as an educational tool. How should a person best support a friend with similar struggles to Charlie? Heartstopper season 3 clearly lists tips for viewers to keep in mind.
Previously, Charlie drafted an “I love you” message to Nick. Season 2 left viewers on that cliffhanger. Although that message isn’t sent, there is an “I love you” declaration this season. Moreover, it’s worth the wait. The “I love you” exchange delivers suspense, humour, and euphoria. Whether viewers want romance, friendship, or familial love, Heartstopper season 3 delivers the goods.
Heartstopper season 3 will be available to stream on Netflix on October 3.
