Victor’s family reunion with his father Henry is a major highlight of season 3. Whether it’s professional trades or fan discourse, everyone is celebrating it. In a town filled with so much death, a father-son reunion decades in the making is a gift.
We spoke with actor Scott McCord of this powerful moment as well as their journey into the caves in this latest episode.
LadyJenevia: I have to say, Victor’s reunion with Henry is one of my favourite moments of this entire season. Can you share a bit about your process as an actor for conveying so many emotions using minimal dialogue? Also, maybe any collaborative dialogue you had with Robert on how to play that scene of that reunion.
McCord: Yeah, absolutely. Thank you. I’m sure you can imagine it was an exciting scene to do. It was a pretty terrifying scene to do too because of that reason. There were things that I was already working on with Victor at that point. Of course, you know we never know script to script what’s going to come our way. When that landed, I was like ‘Okay.’
What was beautiful about that, and you pointed this out, was that there was two lines of dialogue. That’s it. The way John described it wasn’t written as this elaborate thing. They walk towards each other, they meet just how you see it. I’d read it, put it down, and then I kind of did my homework which is always trying to just find ways that I can somehow relate emotionally to that and what’s going on.
Then, it’s sort of like this process of ‘do the work, do the work, do the work, and then show up, and just see what’s going to happen.’
With Robert, we had actually shot one other little scene together that’s early on in our story. He and I, we connected. We decided to we didn’t have a lot to do with each other. Even that day, we didn’t see each other. Even in between takes, we would just go off. We tried to create, to have that moment just be as raw and as real as it could be.
I’ll just say this. For all the work that I did, and as nervous as you can be about about doing that, every time I would walk up into that moment, and I would look into Robert Joy’s eyes, and he would just say my name. That’s what did it to me every single time. A lot of what I’ve been talking about today is just that moment.
It’s so loaded. Coming into this moment and looking at this, there’s a whole lifetime lost between these two people. Even with what Victor says, he is so loaded with guilt of how ‘I failed him,’ you know? I think that’s a big layer of that, so that definitely got me every single time, having to say that to him each time we would do that.
Thanks for bringing that scene up. It was a big milestone for Victor this season.
Down The Rabbit Hole
LadyJenevia: When Victor goes into the tunnels to try to find Jasper, one of the creatures tells him that if he keeps coming down there, one of these days they’re going to make him stay. In your imagination and and understanding of Victor, how often do you believe that he’s going down there and for what reason?
McCord: I think that this is a first for Victor, for sure. He hasn’t done this before. This is the exciting thing about the storyline this season. For Victor, it’s like the task becomes clear. I think it only becomes clearer once Henry arrives. It’s pretty selfless at that point. It’s like, ‘I’m gonna go down, I’m gonna do this thing.’ I think it’s a real moment of growth for Victor, going down there and doing that. That’s a great moment when that happens and they say that. As to whether Victor will go down there and do that again… who knows?
