Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice & the Origins of Moira Rose

Welcome back to The Rewind Podcast!

Jonah and Keeks are back to discuss Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 film Beetlejuice.

After unveiling their new viral clip segment, Keeks recalls a story about a former pet he reluctantly took in at the request of a then-roommate, and yes, Keeks got the last laugh. Before that story could spiral out of control, the hosts returned to the main topic, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

As they discussed stand-out characters and scene-stealing moments, Jonah had to gather Keeks when he minimized Justin Theroux’s (Rory) acting career. Turns out Theroux has a few deep dive characters that Keeks found entertaining, mainly his roles in Zoolander and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. The hosts couldn’t stop praising Catherine O‘Hara’s (Delia Deetz) and Willem Dafoe’s (Wolf Jackson) ability to command every scene they were in. Keeks was absolutely convinced Dafoe ad-libbed several parts, with absolutely no proof, of course. While they spent time admiring O’Hara, Jonah and Keeks couldn’t help but acknowledge her portrayal of Delia Deetz is the true origin of Moira Rose.

There were some obvious absences from the film. The Maitlands, originally played by Geena Davis (Barbara Maitland) and Alec Baldwin (Adam Maitland), did not return to this film. Director Tim Burton wanted to return to the practical effects that made the original movie so special. Taking Davis and Baldwin back to 1988 would require extensive and EXPENSIVE CGI. Jeffrey Jones (Charles Deetz) was also missing. The character’s final moments were depicted using claymation, similar to the effect used in the original Beetlejuice. Do you know why Jones didn’t return to this film? Watch or listen to find out why.
