WARNING: Spoilers for the season finale of Creature Commandos
Frightening Origins
The commandos have reunited and the consequences of their actions will affect some members more than others. The origins of Nina Mazursky are also explored in this episode as we see how the past reflects things that happen in the future. Born with her lungs outside of her body, Nina experiences so much loss and hardship in her upbringing. Her mother leaves at a young age, and an experiment to cure her leaves her looking like a fish monster able to only breathe in water leading to a life of ridicule and isolation. Despite this tragic background, Nina maintained an optimistic outlook on life and embraced her physical appearance.
Breaking & Entering
Back in Pokolistan, Task Force M breaches the perimeter and makes their way into a security tower. Not only do they find some surprising information, they’re met by Frankenstein. Without hesitating, Bride unloads clips into Frankenstein, sending him out the window. Before succumbing to his wounds and passing out, Frankenstein utters the name “Rick Flag”. The commandos make their way to an area where they wait for Ilana to take a swim. Bride tells Nina she has to be the one to kill Ilana, due to her being the only one able to swim underwater. Unfortunately, Weasel gave away the presence of the commandos, which led to Princess Ilana killing Nina in the process. Bride receives word from Amanda Waller to call off the assassination, after the fact.
Famous Last Words
After the death of Nina, everyone reconvenes at the castle. Bride and Ilana have a one-on-one conversation in private quarters. Ilana tries to convince Bride that Circe framed her, but Bride reveals she knows about the footage with the Princess and Clayface – confirming Circe’s visions to be true all along. The Bride then puts a bullet in the princess’s head. However, not to save the rest of the world, but because Ilana killed the only friend she had – Nina. Of all the characters in the show, this growth from Bride comes full circle albeit, tragically. The only friend she ever made was killed, and to make it worse, it is in a way, also her fault.
New Beginnings
The commandos are brought back to Belle Reve, and Bride is named the new leader of the commandos while Flag still recovers. We get a glimpse of King Shark (from The Suicide Squad) as well as a rebuilt and upgraded G.I. Robot. Frankenstein is also shown to be alive in a post-credits sequence. With the show being confirmed for a second season it would make sense to have a couple of new faces to add to the returning team of monsters. What the next mission will be for Task Force M remains to be seen. Overall, Creature Commandos offers an exciting, tragic, and earnest look into the DCU that James Gunn has planned for the future, and this soft launch stuck the landing.
