Keeping Up The Charade

The final episode of the season opens on our main cast down in the depths of At Attin. Jod is playing up the part of Emissary, with the children playing along. Fern and her mother Fara escort Jod to the supervisor’s tower while the remaining children are ordered to stay home to be watched by droids. The supervisor is revealed to be a droid, inspired by Hal 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Then in true Artificial Intelligence fashion, even the supervisor knew Jod was neither a Jedi nor the Emissary, immediately calling for the rogue to be detained. However, Jod makes quick work of the sentient being and causes a power outage throughout the town, and in turn the safety droids.

The Battle for At Attin

In the wake of the blackout, Jod’s pirate crew launched an assault on At Attin. Once Wim realizes the safety droids are no longer operational, he tells his father the truth about Jod. To save At Attin, Neel, Wim, and KB reunite and formulate a play to save their home. The children speed towards the Onyx Cinder to get a distress call to Kh’ymm to alert the New Republic. Visually, the speed chase toward the ship is one of the best sequences of Star Wars in a long while. By real-world standards this is equal to a bike race, but under the guise of a galaxy far, far away. When the kids finally get to the ship, they cannot take off due to safety locks that can only be removed while powered on. Wim and his father make their way to the tower and distract Jod to restore power.

Urgent Message

With power restored, KB can get a message to Kh’ymm for help. Unfortunately, the Onyx Cinder is then shot down. Enraged, Fern and Wim along with Wendle and Fara, separate Jod from the saber and successfully shut down the barrier around At Attin. X-Wings from the New Republic arrive and drive the pirates off, blowing their ships down and apprehending the galactic thieves. As Wim and Fern make for the elevator, Wim calls out to Jod who smirks in defeat. After reuniting with Neel, the children race to the crash site to find KB alive, along with SM-33. As the power returns to At Attin, our protagonists look up with hope – cut to the credits.

The Next Adventure?

With the end of the season, many ponder whether or not there could be another season of Skeleton Crew. Jon Watts has confirmed they have ideas for a second season. In the event a second season were to happen, the storytelling opportunities are ripe for exploration. Between exploring more of Jod’s backstory and escaping Order 66, or watching the children continue to grow, the possibilities for these characters to have longevity in Star Wars seems more than possible. Whether or not it does happen, lies in the hands of the House of Mouse, as well as Lucasfilm. Given Lucasfilm has deepened its relationship with Disney+ since the release of The Mandalorian and the reception of Skeleton Crew has been overwhelmingly positive, a green light for a second season would be ideal. Overall Skeleton Crew delivered a hearty adventure filled with a great blend of humor and spectacle all Star Wars fans can find enjoyment in.
