If Smirks Could Kill—A Dexter: Original Sin Review

Welcome back to The Rewind Podcast!

Jonah and Keeks brave the Miami heat to find out if Dexter: Original Sin lives up to the legacy of the Dexter franchise.

Keeks is a Dexterverse newcomer, and Jonah is a fan of the original series and the 2021 revival Dexter: New Blood. With eight seasons (96 episodes) of Dexter and 10 episodes of the revival, there is a lot of lore to cover, but the best part of a prequel series is that a newcomer can start viewing without the weight of show canon. However, there is a downside. Fan service and callbacks are lost to Dexter newbies. Jonah carefully navigated his responses to Keeks’ wild takes. He walks through show history without too many spoilers, so Keeks has just enough to keep him interested in continuing his Dexter journey.

And yes, your hosts take a moment to gush over Buffy the Vampire Slayer alumni Sarah Michelle Gellar (SMG) and Julie Benz, both existing in the Dexterverse. Did you realize another fandom franchise Jonah and Keeks share is now part of this world? Here’s a hint, SMG appears in that franchise as well.

How does the show hold up? Will Keeks keep watching the show? Watch, or listen, to find out.

Dexter: Original Sin Synopsis

Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter Morgan as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
