For the last month, there have been breadcrumbs as to what James Gunn’s next project would be in the DCU. During an earnings call, David Zaslav mentioned that James Gunn will write and direct the next installment in the Super Family. Shortly after that, while doing press for season 2 of Peacemaker, Gunn confirmed his next project would be a follow-up to Superman, taking place in the “Superman Saga”.
Today on social media, Gunn revealed the title and release date for his next project: Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters July 9th, 2027. Gunn had said while doing press for Superman that it would not be a direct sequel but would heavily feature the Man of Steel. Along with the title and date announcement, Gunn shared concept art showcasing Superman and Lex Luthor wearing his patented battle armor, aka Lexosuit.
Could this be a subtle reference from Gunn, implying a team-up between adversaries? Lex Luthor says himself that his biggest concern is the safety of the Earth. What if the next threat he faces is something else extra terrestrial?
Supergirl had a brief appearance at the end of Superman. We know that she is getting her own film in 2026. With Man of Tomorrow being the next DC film, is it possible she is responsible for bringing the next villain to Earth? The best guest for the new big bad would likely be Mongul or Brainiac. Gunn has shown that he takes a lot of influences from the comics. The Geoff Johns/ Gary Frank 5-issue Brainiac Arc would be a perfect story after Superman and Supergirl.
While it is safe to assume most of the main players from Superman will return, we do not have a cast list yet. Isabela Merced and Aaron Pierre both reacted to the news on social media. This could be their subtle way of implying that they are in the film. Aaron Pierre will make his DCU debut in the television series Lanterns. It will be interesting to see if Man of Tomorrow introduces more characters from the DCU as Superman did.
There is plenty of time to speculate what the focus of the film will be. Until then, Peacemaker is still airing episodes from its second season. Lanterns will likely premiere in early 2026, and then the second DCU film, Supergirl release on June 26, 2026.
Stay tuned for more details on Man of Tomorrow.
