‘Kingsman’ Sequel Gets Release Date

Fans of Kingsman: The Secret Service can rejoice: the so far titled ‘Kingsman 2‘ has a release date: 16 June 2017. Kingsman is based on the comic The Secret Service, published by Icon Comics–the imprint of Marvel Comics–and written by Eisner Award winner  Mark Millar (Ultimate X-Men, Civil War).  The sequel sports a screenplay co-written by writing team Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class)  and will also be directed by Vaughn. Kingsman 2 is the first sequel Vaughn will have directed, after declining on Kick-Ass 2 and stepping down from X-Men: Days of Future Past to let X-Men and X2: X-Men United director Bryan Singer take his place. Ironically, Vaughn left X-Men: Days of Future Past to work on Kingsman. Kingsman grossed an impressive 413 million dollars world wide, so an announcement of a sequel was quick to follow.

The only actor attached to Kingsman 2 is Taron Egerton. Egerton will be reprising his role of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, the main protagonist introduced in Kingsman: the Secret Service. There has been no official word if other actors from the first film will be reprising their roles or not.

What do you think about Kingsman 2 coming just two years after the first film’s initial release? Might a June 2017 release of Kingsman 2 be an indication that 20th Century Fox is not intent on following through with a sequel to this year’s Fantastic Four reboot–a sequel that was previously announced for a June 9th release?  Also interesting to note: Matthew Vaughn was a producer for 2015’s Fantastic Four.
