REPORT: Ryan Coogler Co-Writing Black Panther

With Captain America: Civil War less than a month away media outlets have started to ramp up the coverage in anticipation for the blockbuster movie event. Last week had Marvel screening the film for the press, and this past weekend was the press junket for the film. As is often the case during Marvel press junkets, new information on what we can expect from upcoming films on the Marvel Studios slate was revealed. With the character’s introduction in the upcoming Civil War, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the topic of the solo Black Panther film came up.

We already know that Black Panther will be directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed), and is currently scheduled for a February 2018 release. In an interview with Collider Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, was asked if the film’s script was finished. His answer provided us with some really good news that we didn’t know before.

“Very soon. We have a number of writers on it including Ryan Coogler, who is also directing, he’s working on the draft right now. Between now and the end of the summer there will be more casting announcements. We start filming at the very beginning of next year.”

Coogler has shown with his two feature films that he is not only a great director, but is a gifted writer as well. Given his history writing the movies he directs, the fact that the talented 29 year old filmmaker is working on the latest draft of the Black Panther script isn’t necessarily a surprise, but is exciting nonetheless. Between Chadwick Boseman’s performance in Captain America: Civil War getting positive early buzz, and now word that Coogler is working on the latest draft of the script, anticipation for T’Challa’s solo movie is somehow even higher than it was.

Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman, and directed by Ryan Coogler is scheduled for release on February 16, 2016.
