Untitled X-Men Pilot In Development At FOX: Hellfire Club Dead

There’s a new pilot in town, and it has nothing to do with the Hellfire club. Marvel announced today the creation of a new action-adventure series that aims to put a new spin on the X-men story and put the audience directly into the X-men universe.

According to marvel, the new series will focus on two ordinary parents who discover that their children possess mutant powers.  Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family must join up with an underground network of mutants and fight to survive.  The series will be produced by 20th Century Fox and Marvel Television with Fox handling the physical production.

“Developing a Marvel property has been a top priority for this network and we are so pleased with how Matt Nix has led us into this thrilling universe.” said Madden. “There’s comic book adventure, emotional relationships, and a rich existing mythology from which to draw.  With this brilliant production crew behind the series it has all the makings of a big, fun, and exciting new series.”

According to Jonathon Davis, President of creative affrais at Fox Television, this is the achievement of a professional dream, “Matt, Lauren, Bryan, Simon, Jeph, and Jim are a powerhouse team of creative artists.” he said, “And we can’t wait to get started on what will easily become one of this development season’s most exciting new projects.”

The story of a mutant, particularly mutant children living in a brave new world of discovering who they are is a powerful one, and it’s one that Marvel’s tackled in comics before with their “Marvels” series, the story of ordinary people in the Marvel universe.  While recognizable characters are fun, it’s fascinating to see where this will go.  It’s currently unknown if this will tie into the movies, but we’ll keep you posted on further developments.

This means that something must go however, and it appears that Hellfire is dead in the water according to Variety. Don’t despair, like comic book heroes and villains dead is never truly dead in hollywood, however for the moment it’s no longer moving forward.

“Marvel Television is thrilled to be co-producing with 20th century Fox on our first television project.” added Jeph Leob, Head of Marvel Television, “Matt’s a huge fan of the X-men, and his take on the X-men universe with it’s rich characters and high stakes adventure is exactly the kind of show we want on Fox. It’s a great team of producers that will be making something entirely unique.”
