Plot: Ruh oh. Amadeus is in trouble. As the result of his reckless actions in the previous issue, the king of Wakanda himself T’Challa now has his sights set on the Totally Awesome Hulk!
Story: Following the death of his mentor Bruce Banner, an angry Amadeus Cho has been on the hunt for Clint Barton. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to him, he’s not the only one doing a little hunting. Last issue left off with Black Panther declaring he’ll take care of our hero. In issue #10, we see T’Challa making good on his word to stop the seemingly uncontrollable Amadeus before it’s too late.
Before the action begins we get a great conversation between T’Challa and SHIELD liaison Jake Oh while Black Panther is monitoring our totally awesome (grieving) Hulk on board the S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarrier. Greg Pak really digs deep into the motives of T’Challa, who’s taking part in the ongoing Civil War II event.
There was a lot of great points made by both men. I particularly liked how Oh was questioning his place in SHIELD after the death of James Rhodes aka War Machine and the recent actions of Carol Danvers.
As for action, this book delivered what was promised: a showdown between Black Panther and the Totally Awesome Hulk. Amadeus was outmatched by the King of Wakanda. Kid Hulk may have the intelligence, but T’Challa has been doing this for years. He’s an expert in hand to hand combat and a genius whose always prepared.
T’Challa brought out the big guns for this fight. Seeing his own version of the Hulk Buster armor throw-down with Amadeus was pretty cool. Even though it wasn’t necessarily a life or death fight, it was still a thrill to see.
Art: Mahmud Asrar provided some decent penciling for this book. While I love the detail he put into Amadeus’ Hulked-out form, I would’ve preferred to see that same amount of detail in the other characters.
The coloring has been consistently great each issue. No matter who the colorist is, I know that before opening up the the first page, I’m in for a treat. Nolan Woodard had a shot at the colors this time and continued the books trend of providing vibrant colors. Woodard’s colors in the more action-oriented panels are light. This still gives the comic a more playful feel despite the content being a bit serious than what we’re used to.
Verdict: Totally Awesome Hulk #10 is an action packed read that takes a slight departure from the bright and fun tone seen in the previous issues.
